THE OBJECTIVE

The Hunger Games is a popular dystopian trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. For my Visual and Print Communications class at James Madison University, we were assigned to redesign a book jacket and explain our design decisions implemented in our final asset. I selected the first book of the trilogy, entitled The Hunger Games.

THE APPROACH

The first novel follows the journey of the trilogy protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, in her first Hunger Games. A symbol of the series that appears quickly within the first few chapters of the book is fire, and Katniss is later nicknamed “The Girl on Fire.” She earns this nickname when she reveals her dress is able to spit fire when she spins around. I identified fire as a recurring symbolic theme of the novel on the cover in both imagery and color, as Katniss organizes a rebellion against the totalitarian rule of President Snow and The Capital. I selected a thematic quote for the back cover delivered by Katniss’ mentor, “Here’s some advice. Stay alive.”
